真珠はその清らかで、気品にあふれたことから古くからクレオパトラ・卑弥呼等、多くの人に愛好されてきました。我が国でも古事記・日本書紀に散見され、冠婚の儀式に用いられています。パールはラテン語の「ペルナ」(貝の名前)に由来します。現在はアコヤ貝・白蝶、黒蝶貝などで養殖されたものが多いですが、美しい色をした真円をしたものほど良質とされています。
